Memorial Day weekend with David was a great success. Before we left, I checked off many of the to do items on my unrealistic list, left Dinah with a new FashionMista toy (see below), and hit the road with a semi plan of where we were going. We visited his best high school friend's daughter's soccer game outside of Phili, and then drove through Phili, and to David's great pleasure, got lost in South Phili, which was not even on our map, and saw the row houses where Rocky trotted down the stairs off to the ring.
Like good little location scouts, we took many detours to check out the land before rolling into New Town, and then up Taylor road by the Taylor State park, a beautiful piece of country with lots of rolling horse farms and expanding corries. We pulled into New Hope, on the edge of Pennsylvania on the Delaware River, and by extension, Lambertville (like Lambert the Sheepish Lion), which was across a bridge at the edge of New Jersey. We were the exact opposite of any Lets Go travel book, and found that all bed and breakfasts were booked (never book a bed and breakfast in a small town on Memorial Day Weekend an hour before you'd like to check in). But we did find the Lambertville Inn and booked the second to last room, which had to be a suite (sweet!) with jacuzzi, soaps and a courtyard below. We spent the whole day shopping (me a little too long in Metro, the only store which sold Free People), had to leave A Mano Galleries before I did some damage on some gummy window decorations, and talked about me maybe opening a boutique of my own one day...
the mecca - the jacuzzi
the delaware river, connecting new hope and lambertville, and is close to (or actually) where washington crossed in 1772 (v. appropriate for memorial day weekend)
pretty canal in new hope
new hope/lambertville good for families
baby and mother turtles at base of bridge between new hope and lambertville
scary skeletal iron deer crossing the canal
possible boutique location in lambertiville
new fashionmista for dinah
We wrapped the day up with a Google investigation into why David's hand still has red dots and is slightly numb from that aweful jumping cholla bush from our AZ trip, and how he most likely has 'sabra dermatitis' from left over 'glochids' from the spikes of the cholla cactus.

Holiday To Do List - Against the Clock
I'm determined to have a 'normal' Memorial Day weekend, which means I will not be excited to use Monday as a katie james work day. I will try to enjoy a day traveling somewhere in the car with David! Therefore, I've split the weekend in half: Friday night and Saturday morning/afternoon for katie james, Sunday and Monday for holiday...
Step one: get back to writing down the to-do list. So here it is for the weekend, which will be divided. Friday night and Sat. morning is my biz. Then we holiday. Let's see how much I can do...
- Finally make kitty toy - with sequence - which includes visiting trimming store to buy more sequence (done)
- Make more pant protectors for girls on bikes to sell on site. Try making with a thinner band - which includes going to the trimming store to buy thinner band (bought the strap; still need to make more)
- Work on the business plan to get some $$$!
- Ship consignment products to Junk in Our Trunk (done, and included unaccounted for trip to the USPS which included cranky PO worders, and one was maybe drunk)
- Pull products to sell in Ohio art show (done)
- Design new free desktop art for June's mailing to mailing list
- Write book review for the blog for The Booster
- Change out spring clothes (totally unrelated to business, but very important)
- Create and send evite for birthday (done)
Unrealistic goals:
- If a good design of a kitty toy presents itself, make more, take pictures, upload to shopping cart
ok, go!
Unplanned activities that have occured so far:
- Breakfast
- Trip to the USPS when Click-N-Ship didn't work (goodby one hour of life)
- Trip to Starbucks with purchase of The Little Willies
- Clean the house! (inspired by new bottle of Comet that disolves soap scum)
- Sit outside in the sun with Gerdy

I Dream of Rings
Last night, I had a dream. About a ring. A ring from David. Only it wasn't from David, but from my old fiancé, which I was very not pleased about. What I was even more not pleased about was that the setting, which was a white gold, was like a telescope. It was a .5" tall cylinder with an emerald at the top. I was worried I would bang it all over the place. It was just like a ring that one of our friends had (in the dream, not real life), which was odd. Only mine could get shorter. It could smush into a moon ring shape and reveal the Ohio State stadium with little colored dots in the seats.
I told David this morning that I did not want an Ohio State stadium ring with little colored dots in the seats, if he should get me one.
:)

Production? Who Needs to Sew?
I went to my production guy the other day to pick up some jewelry bags. I'd been trying to reach him because he just wasn't working as late anymore, and I kept missing him. The shop would be closed at 6pm, and that never happened. His cell phone, which didn't have voicemail anyway, really didn't have voicemail now. It often disconnected before really trying. So I finally got him and he sent his wife over to open the shop to give me my bags at 4:45pm.
Open the shop? Yeah, that's right. Open the shop. I asked if they were sewing as much anymore. Her response? "Ritchie been so busy!" Yeah, I said, busy with what? "That restaurant! Ritchie open a restaurant!"
So my production has become a Chinese restaurant in Brooklyn. Oy ve! I'm on the hunt for new stitchers. If anyone has any recommendations, please email me!

katie james on Scoop du Jour!
The first big placement for katie james - Scoop du Jour! Being a weekly reader of Scoop du Jour, I'm excited to now be one of the many indie and non-indie but always cute designers offering a fresh new design and 10% off! Read what Scoop du Jour is all about, then stick around for the PS at the bottom...that's me!
I first discovered Scoop du Jour one morning on the subway while reading AM New York. The founder was interviewed in one of the small business sections or hot-new-New Yorky sections, and I thought she and her idea were just swell so I signed right up. If you haven't already, go sign up for a dish of sumthin delish!

So Far So Happy - Benefits Makeup
Still on the quest for the perfect mascara, I've found a new one from San Francisco based Benefit and paired it with Benefit's Mr. Frosty pearly white eye color. That means that on the outs is the mascara from Fresh. It was voted too gloopy. I still love their liquid foundation, though.
I bought the Bad Gal mascara from Sephora, but from Benefit's website, you can get a gift set of black eyeliner and black mascara for cheaper (shucks). I love the way Mr. Frosty smoothly covers my lids in pearly/frosty white and really 'opens' my eyes! And the mascara brush was larger than the one I was used to, but just using it made me feel like I was making some vampy eyes, or could of if I wanted to.
Bad Gal Lash mascara
Mr. Frosty Eye Color
ps: what i really love about mr. frosty (and i love mr. frostry) is that he goes on like a cool, soft, fat crayon, but without going on too heavy.
Check out their website for all kinds of fun glitter liquid, gold eye color, acne care and color pumps. I kinda can't wait to get more makeup from them! Did somebody say: "birthday money"?

Beauty Day - Cheap Tricks
Every girl must have a beauty day at least once a month, if not twice. Some of you may have one every other day, but for those of us who get caught up in work or budget crisis, it must be worked in. Beauty Days are not just physical treatments. They are states of mind.
Today's Beauty Day consisted of:
1. Wake up at 7:30am to leisurely walk Gerdy in the park in morning sun.
2. 11:30am bikini wax at Scott J Aveda Salon Spa. This puts me on a heated water bed in good company, no double dipping, finished by the steaming towel. ($28 + $5 tip). More on how to get the best bikini wax.
3. Stay for complimentary "hand treatment" aka hand massage without the manicure. Try to hit beauty places that carry Aveda, as Aveda likes to promote their new products and encourages employees to sell, sell, sell, and so we reap the benefits of free treatments to lure us into buying the newest scent. (free)
4. Tall-half-caff-one-pump-vanilla Starbucks latte ($3.68)
5. Smell wonderful as you walk home (thanks Aveda), buy super perfumed lilacs from florist on street ($11)
6. Disperse lilacs all over house (see picture below) for fresh scents.
7. Sit outside in sun and think about whatever you need to, or read Narnia.
Also, please note up close view of my 'garden' in my kitchen. I'm quite obsessed with these flowers now. Gardening is the other thing I do on Beauty Days. The skinny fucia geranium on the far right has been with me for my entire NYC stay (4 years) and has been through many ups and downs. It was about to be on it's final down, so I cut it way back, got it a friend in its pot (for encouragement) and fresh soil. It's doing better now.

All Hail Cingular
Hooray for Cingular! Not only am I usually the only one to get good service while in the boondox of upstate NY, odd parts of OH, or the deserts of AZ, but I now worked out a nice deal with Cingular to help me on my apparently bad habit of going over my minutes.
My bill is normally $97 after taxes, etc., give or take. The past few months it slipped into the $100s, and this month, hit a record $244! Ouch! I called Cingular this morning and talked to a nice southern boy who reassured me that he could help. And he did. $96 of credit off the bad bill, and gave me roll over minutes for this month to see me through to my next billing cycle, which will be under a new billing plan of $10 more. In total, I will talk for free after 7pm weekdays, and free weekends for the $66.99 plan plus taxes, etc. Text messaging is in there as well.
What I did not know, but was not the killer to my bill, was that because I am a free agent (no contract), I did not have free mobile to mobile for Cingular (Kelly W. take note). I plan on upgrading to the Nokia 9300, which has the keyboard and is good for Internet. But I'm going to wait until I sign the two years to get about $150 off the phone. At that point, I'll get my free mobile to mobile.
And I really do have fewer dropped calls. If I drop, 9 times out of 10 it's the other person's phone carrier. Ahem. Verizon?

UPS and IMG Fashion Announce World Wide Open Call
UPS and IMG Fashion have called a world wide open call for emerging designers to be showcased in the UPS hub at Olympus Fashion Week in Bryant Park from September 8 to 15, 2006, FashionWeekDaily.com reports. This is the UPS hub that showcased Project Alabama, the super cool Alabama based label that proudly boasts that their stitchers are women of all ages from Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Competition Details (from FashionWeekDaily.com):
Designers must have been in business for at least two years and have sold a minimum of two collections to boutiques or department stores. The 10 designers will be selected by a panel composed of key domestic and international fashion editors, retailers and industry pros. Those selected will have their venue rental subsidized by UPS, which includes state-of-the-art lighting, sound and staging, and inclusion in all Olympus Fashion Week collateral materials, marketing, public relations and advertising. They will also benefit from added marketing materials developed by UPS for the initiative.
Designers interested in participating should send materials, including look books, videos and sketches, to:
IMG Fashion
Attention: UPS Delivers Fashion’s Future
420 West 45th Street
New York, NY 10036
Phone, email and in-person inquires will not be accepted, and no materials will be returned. The deadline for applications is June 1, 2006.
Interestingly, as a side note, I worked for IMG as a 'floating temp' when I first moved to New York (one of my many, many jobs). I did work in the W. 45th street office, which held the production arm of IMG (so their production company and internet venture arm were housed there). I went on a few dates with some of the office locals, and had a good time of it. I won't be entering this contest, because I'm not producing a clothing line, but wouldn't it have been interesting to end up in those offices again - as a designer.
