Engaged. Build a Ring, Build a Life

When I wrote the earlier cryptic post, I was standing in front of our elevator with Gerdy, in the morning, waiting for David to get done in our apartment and lock up for our morning walk. As you may have guessed, I look for clues for the conclusion of The Proposal on a daily basis, and I had accumulated quite a bit of what I thought was evidence, but I was quite wrong. This morning revealed a whole new set of clues, and I was so breathless, that everyone I secretly called only had voice mails, and then I remembered that my iPhone could get online, so I wrote the quickest post that I could.

Here is the background to the following events:
1. David went to Columbus a few weeks ago to go to an Ohio State game. We had just been there, and he did have a mystery phone call with a "ticket seller" that never panned out.

2. David was supposed to get a FedEx on Friday that had a script in it for his next job. We were supposed to go to Peter Lugers, a really good steakhouse in Brooklyn, for a reservationless lunch. At 1pm, when I stopped my work to ask David when we were leaving, he told me that the package never came, and that we would have to drive to the FedEx store at 8pm to pick it up - west of Time Square, which stinks. This met with much huffiness on my part, because no one should ever have to drive to the FedEx place. The little man in the truck should drive his hiney back, and I was going to make him do that. But no, we picked it up that night. There were two boxes for him, in fact.

3. This particular morning, the morning after the FedEx pickup (which segwayed into white wine and chocolate crepes at my request), David had to move the car at 6:30am for alternate side parking. When he returned, he had treated himself to a pumpkin spice latte and was carrying white and purple roses wrapped in paper. A glorious site in the morning.

4. Also on this morning, David's back hurt, and he decided to make a pillow for himself to sleep on top of out of my fabric. He chose a scrap of lambskin. I questioned his choice, and the small circle he had just cut, and wondered just what kind of pillow would this make. I was told to not question while he was designing.

The day began as usual - me recovering from a very full dinner of crepes by putting on water for coffee, feeding the animals, and watering the plants. The morning was golden at 8am with a strong September sun. I folded my loads of laundry that piled up onto the couch (can't do domestic things during the work day in a home office), wiped all surfaces with 409 or Pledge, and got ready for a shower.

While in the bathroom getting ready for the shower (aka analyzing every pour on my nose), I had a sudden and urgent desire to tell David how wonderful my Crystol Exfoliator is, and how it is going to get rid of the two baby rednesses that have appeared on my cheek, and to be honest, one on his cheek. I swung open the bathroom door and tried waltzing into the living room, but David literally sprang up, smuthered me in hugs, and then proceeded to bounce up and down, to 'loosen up his muscles' after sleeping on our failing mattress.

Back in the shower, I thought I had my first clue: he had something that he couldn't show me. I was contact-less, so couldn't see a thing anyway. Satisfied with this clue, I continued as usual (but opted for a day-old-hair), got dressed, makeup-ed, and went to the kitchen for a glass of water before Gerdy's walk. And that is where my 2nd clue lay: on my desk, were scissors and a piece of purple elastic, which I have not used in ages, and I always put scissors away. David had cut something decorative. I quickly looked around the living room for the srap of lambskin, thinking that if it was a pillow, he'd leave it lying around for another inspiration. But it was gone. The FexEx package was on a nearby table. On a decadent whim, I thought of checking the package for who actually sent it, but slapped my hand and left it alone.

Cut to: me outside of the elevator, posting "Strange things are happening" with my iPhone.

Outside, while walking down the sidewalk to Central Park (our daily route), David declared that he would like to go to the duck pond to check on them, since it seemed they had been swimming in slime before. I know that this algae clears up on clear days, but agreed. But then he specified that Gerdy was to go do her thing in the woods first, and then we were to check on the ducks. He's never made any such request on Gerdy's walk before. I had to look away to hide my giggle. On this route, he had me listen to the 5 voicemails of me that he has been saving on his phone for the past 3.5 years - which comprised of me being silly, saying hello, singing, sneezing, and apologizing for needing Katie Time sometimes.

Gerdy was being stubborn, of course, since this was Saturday, and that means she gets an extra long walk around the ball fields further into the park.

But David took over leash duty and led her to the edge of the pond, to a bench, that was populated with kanoolding Europeans. David went to another spot, under a beautifully dead looking tree that backbends into the water and is actually still alive. I was to later learn that this was a backup location he scouted if the bench was occupied (he's a Location Manager for films).

Under that tree, David asked if I wanted to see something, and dug into his shorts pockets. The wrong pocket, and dug into more pockets. Out came a little brown leather envelope wrapped in gold ribbon from my new art supply closet. He asked me to open it, and placed his hands underneath it, and told me that this was the beginning of new things, and that he wanted to build a ring and a life with me. Then he got onto one knee, and well, he didn't need to stay down there long. I unwrapped the leather and found two glittering diamonds and a metal prong grabber thing.

I have now learned, that David went to Columbus to meet with a jewelry designer, and explain just what kind of diamond I liked - mine cut - for its imperfections. David wanted them to be old, so the jeweler sent him two turn of the century diamonds - one round with the glittery cuts, and one slightly squarish, also with glittery cuts. I was to chose, and we are to design the ring. I have two days to submit my thoughts on the design, and then David ships the stones back so that the jewelry can get started, in order for the ring to be finished by Thanksgiving.

art deco engagement ring drawings

In the meantime, David wanted me to get a "girly" ring, so when we got home and began researching, we went straight to Etsy.com to search for rings, and got this one, which is a giant aquamarine from Starry Designs, which is David's birth stone.

Part of why this threw me, is that we had a birthday party for a 2 year old to go to in New Jersey in a matter of hours, and a party in the evening for a couple who is leaving NYC for Chicago. So our reflection on all of this is very short! Not to mention design research. But, we are both thinking Art Deco, so, thanks again to the iPhone, while driving to NJ, I searched online and found some beautious designs. And, David suggested I incorporate a symbolic element from my or his families, like a family flag (Scottish flag or something). And so I picked the Edelwiess flower because it was my grandmother's favorite song in The Sound of Music, it has Swiss ties which my family likes, and German ties, which is my dad's side. So, we drew some things out, and have found a few Art Deco rings like this one to work from. But now I'm liking tulips...so who knows.

Clues I missed:
1. He did go to my parents after coming back from Columbus (my parents are in Cleveland), to ask their permission. He was so nervous, that when my dad went to shake his hand, he didn't see it because he kept yabbering about something or other to both of my parents.

2. He wanted Gerdy to be part of the proposal because she's part of my life, and now his, and our courtship. She will be a Flower Dog.

3. My mom almost told me a few times. She was talking about it in emails to select people, and sent me their email. Twice, she called me frantically, begging me not to open the email and to delete it.

And so, that is the news from Lake Wobegone. More to come, I guess, on the avalanche of wedding planning. Eee!

strange Things...

are happening...stay tuned...

A Beauty : Onyx Flower Ring from South Street Designs

black onyx ring puffina on etsyLove the Stylhive/Etsy combo. There is no official partnership there, it's just that there are so many cute things in Etsy, that they get Stylehived all the time. Like this new black onyx flower ring from Puffluna at South Street Designs. Its clear, greenish jade sister was hived by bunches of people, and after I hived it, I went to buy it, but no...sold out (but she has more stuff). I have an onyx ring from years past, but it is currently in a tangle with a gold baby necklace of mine, so I broadened my onyx ring horizons and got this, which is just perfect and looks exactly as it does in the picture. She custom made it to my ring size, and voila. Fit perfectly.

Iman "Tigress" ad from 1977

via Gawker

This ad is intriguing to me for a couple reasons. First because, it's Iman. Who doesn't want to look at her all day? Second, because in spite of her incredible beauty and grace, this is so horribly styled, even by 1977 standards. If they were going for the "looks like she was just attacked by a tiger" look then I suppose they succeeded but really, why the bed head? This doesn't say wild and sexy to me, it says just rolled out of bed, a bed which just happens to be a bus terminal. Also, Tigress? I've read that many Black models complain that the fashion machine exploits race, using images of Black women as a negative construction. Instead of being presented as the beautiful women they are, they are instead presented as animalistic and exotic, something other than beautiful. Lastly, the ad immediately made me think of Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" video.

Now, to be perfectly honest, I freaking loved that video when I was a preteen. I lived, breathed and dreamed Duran Duran and when I first saw that video, I was floored. I mean, it had an honest to God dark skinned Black woman in it and she got to kiss Simon Le Bon. I so wanted to be her. It's so funny how once just accepts things at face value when one is a child. Thinking about that video now sorta makes me cringe.

"1234" or "one two three four" From iPod Nano Commercial - Feist - Great Album!

The lovely 1234 song singer is Feist! First name Leslie. Love this song from the iPod Nano commercial! It's been in my head all day, so I found it in iTunes and bought the album - The Reminder. It's beautiful. The album lives up to Feist's break out song 1,2,3,4. Check it out, and check out "The Park" if you haven't heard it yet.

I didn't realize it, but David and I have been under a rock about her - Leslie Feist - of Feist. David is researching Leslie Feist online, and finding the most from a New York Times feature article on her. We learned that she injured her vocal chords, which is when and why she learned to play the guitar; she's been in the indie scene for a while; she played drums and other instruments for other bands until realizing she just had to play for her own band; that she held lots of odd jobs including one at a flower shop; and that she called her dad before making the 1234 video to excitedly tell him she was going to dance in a video that was inspired by the movie Fame. Here are some good links:

Bunches of people are searching for 1 2 3 4 from Feist, according to Yahoo

And here is the "chocolate" cell phone commercial from Verizon featuring My Moon My Man, also on Feist's The Reminder album (I can feel the competition Verizon is feeling from Apple!):

Another Look at Cavalli for H&M

Just as we all suspected, Cavalli for H&M means lots leopard and gold. This party collection makes me happy that I no longer live a short walk away from H&M. If I was still in Luxembourg, I would probably buy every piece of this...and then never wear it.

That said, I like what he's done here, which essentially was pirate his other line on the super cheap. The whole thing just makes me think of New Year's Eve. I'm curious to see the accessories collection.

StyleHive Shoe Face-Off with Widgets

Inspired by Danielle's little revenge on me for showing these Camper boots, and fueled by my white wine induced enthusiasm during a Patty Griffin concert last night in Central Park, I've created a new game for us to torture ourselves with our favorite shoes that we're not buying - yet.

Here's mine:

Here's how it will work:
1. We will go into StyleHive and create accounts (if you haven't already)
2. Drag the little 'bookmarklet' into our toolbars, and start hiving our favorite shoes.
3. We will tag them "mista shoe faves" to be sure we're widgetting just the shoes we want (b/c if you use "shoes" then you'll get all the shoes you tagged shoes...make sense?)
4. Then click on My Tools and grab the widget for them so that they can all display on this post. You'll email me the code for the widget (copy and paste it into the email), and I'll post it here with a link back to your blog/website if you've got one. I hope people will play! It's a nice way to unwind between computer projects...

Cupcakes from my Dream Last Night

No joke - my dreams were so visual last night. I saw where my Mista friend lived in Canada, - it was a cool log cabin built into rocks with a back porch that not only butted into a cool, dark, swollen ocean, but the ocean came onto the porch. I remember thinking how pretty it looked, but how cold it would be to stand ankle deep in the cold ocean. And their bedroom was outside, a king size bed, with a 4-poster canopy around it to keep them warm at night, because as my friend said, it did get cold. !?!

The next section of my dream was all about cupcakes. My grandfather was carrying a cookie sheet of bright vanilla and dark chocolate cupcakes to the car, and they looked so good. Then, in my real life this afternoon, in StyleHive again, I saw an exact picture of them! Here they are from The Cupcake Royal Website, talking about how cupcakes are all the rage for weddings:

Post-modern Elegance: Ports 1961 Spring 2008

Ports 1961 collection at fashion week this year was the meeting of classical styling and global village. I think this is really wearable stuff that is also fun and inspired. While most designers seem to think that "African inspired" means throw a bunch of loud colors together, Tia Cibani chose to go with warm rich colors and metallics. Even a color phobic person like myself could get down with these garments.

A Pink Stove

Yes, a pink stove. It's $4,500, but it's pink, and it's functional. From Northstar Retro Range. Found it while I was hiving in my StyleHive.

Style Star: Serena Williams

I never thought I would write these words but Serena Williams looks amazing. What a difference figure flattering clothes, her natural hair color and dumping her makeup gun have made. I don't know what stylist of the gods got a hold of her but s/he deserves an award, his or her own clothing line and a book deal. Bravo! Source: TFS

Accidental Shopping for Paris :: Gentle Fawn

On Sunday, after strolling back from brunch with David, I casually veered off (beelined) into The Liberty House on W. 112 and Broadway, in search of unusual clothing for the Paris trip. (note: The Liberty House was an early boutique to carry my Katie James travel jewelry pouches and checkbook covers). Suddenly it's Fall, and I panicked. Needless to say, David abandoned me for "the scores" in a bar down the street (he got kicked out for loitering, basically, for not buying beer).

Back to clothes. I walked out an inspired woman. It took a hit into the Paris fund, but it's for Paris, so is justified. Plus, I discovered a whole new line: Gentle Fawn. Love it. So comfortable and feminine and smooth and soft knit. Flattering and secretive knit (hides those love handles that Michael Stars shirts can so often expose). Great shapes, great colors.

This is the one that I got:

From their website:
"What started out as an afternoon of innocent thrift shopping turned into a brand new clothing line – and changed the lives of designer Daniel and Carla Hogg. Founded in 2003, Gentle Fawn Clothing is inspired by a rare collection of antique ceramic fawns. Today, the original fawn remains as the symbol of the company’s creative beginnings and its design inspiration. Gentle Fawn is a dynamic and imaginative line of clothing that speaks for people who follow their own paths in life. Our style is clean and modern, with details that give each piece of clothing distinctiveness. Our design reflects a strong sense of fashionable edge, but never neglects the bit of charm that sets us apart from the rest. Fashion is often a question of design versus function. Season after season, Gentle Fawn manages to create a line with the perfect blend of both great designs and functionality. The brand has emerged as a stylish mix of nature and city elements. This balance is the cornerstone of the collection and reflects the lives and philosophies of owners Daniel and Carla."

Little Diversity in Fashion: African-Americans Bemoan Their Absence in Industry

Excerpts from WWD

...By not including more blacks in their shows and ads, Ivan Bart, senior vice president of IMG Models, said designers and other fashion companies are missing out on black women's spending power. "By not having black women represented, those luxury brands are saying they can't afford it," he said.

...[Bethann] Hardison, who has modeled, run her own modeling agency and handled casting over the years, said, "In the United States of America, this is the one industry that still has the freedom to refer to people by their color and reject them in their work."

...Daniel Wolf, a Washington-based attorney who specializes in civil and human rights, said the assumption being made in the fashion industry is that it is legal to discriminate — however false. Wolf recommended that modeling agencies hire the same percentage of black models that are in the entire modeling industry.

...The lack of blacks in all aspects of fashion — from the runway to the executive suite — comes as there is a noticeable increase in the number of Asian models, designers and executives in the industry. Among designers, for example, Thakoon Panichgul, Peter Som, Doo-Ri Chung, Derek Lam, Phillip Lim, and Benjamin Cho have all sprung onto the scene. Of course, designers like Vera Wang, Yeohlee Teng, Anna Sui and Vivienne Tam had already helped pave the way.

...Of the 101 shows and presentations posted on Style.com, 31 appear to have no black models. Most of those who did use black models opted for one or two. However, Heatherette, Diane von Furstenberg, Charles Nolan, Tracy Reese, Yigal Azrouƫl, Philip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Jenni Kayne and Sue Stemp were among the designers who used more than two.

...[Naomi] Campbell, who flew in from London for the occasion, recalled how Christy Turlington once told Dolce & Gabbana, "If you don't use Naomi, you don't get us," referring also to Linda Evangelista. Campbell said that's how she also got into Helmut Lang, Prada and Versace. She used a different route with French Vogue, appealing to Yves Saint Laurent, whose campaigns she had worked on for three years running. The magazine relented after the designer threatened to pull his advertising, which at the time was reportedly the publication's largest advertiser.

...Bill Blass' former designer, Michael Vollbracht, recalled the days when booking Sheila Johnson, Pat Cleveland and other leading African-American beauties was a given. After returning to the industry after a 15-year hiatus, he was surprised to learn that was no longer the case. Age is also an issue, Vollbracht said. Cleveland's return to the Blass runway in 2004 was not well-received, Vollbracht said. "I was told, 'Don't ever put that girl back on the runway.'"

...On occasion [Tracy] Reese's booker has to request specific girls or the modeling agencies will not send them, Reese said.

Most of this, we've all read before so I won't bother to rehash my thought on the subject. The most striking thing about this article to me is that someone would actually complain about watching Pat Cleveland on the runway. Talk about a jaw dropping comment. To be fair, I know that everyone has their favorites in the modeling industry but... damn. That would be like me writing a pissy letter to Anna Wintour every time I saw Kate Moss or Gisele appearing in an advertisement. Personally, I'd pay money to watch Cleveland walk across the street.

Naomi Campbell uncovers British Vogue 'snub'

Top black stylemakers pulled no punches Friday at a panel discussion that accused some top names in fashion of racism.

But in a thought-provoking discussion involving Iman, Andre Leon Talley, Tracy Reese and others, Naomi Campbell stole the show with remarks that make us wonder what, again, is she smoking?

"I've never been on the cover of British Vogue and I've asked a million times and they've always refused me," Campbell insisted at the Blacks in Fashion event.

"They'll put the same white model for half the year — I swear like six times, but wouldn't put me on once in my own country. But I still want my British Vogue cover!"

For the record, since 1987 Naomi has been on the cover of British Vogue eight times: twice with other models, once posing with Diddy and five times by herself.

That bizarre comment aside, Campbell spoke some hard truths about being a person of color in the fashion industry.

"The only time they care about black models is in February [Black History Month]," she said.

"Linda [Evangelista] and Christy [Turlington] would go to big designers and say, 'If you don't pick Naomi to be in your show, then I don't want to be in it.' That's how I got Prada and Helmut [Lang]."

She also said she appeared on the cover of French Vogue only because Yves Saint Laurent "called up ... and told them he'd pull his ads if they didn't. So of course I got the cover."

It must really have been a big deal — she remembers that one!

Source: NY Daily News

Strange. I wonder what Naomi was thinking? I do think it's a bit sad that so far this was the only newspaper article I could find referring to the "Blacks in Fashion" panel discussion, which it didn't even mention it by name. I hope someone gives a first hand account of what when on there, Naomi drama aside.

**EDIT**: I was just over at Clutch Magazine's site and it looks like the panel discussion received some ink from The Guardian.

Honey in the Morning

Honey in coffee is the best thing. I'd call it undiscovered, and my own discovery, but there may be some European culture that does it already. Anyway, not only does it taste great in coffee with heavy cream, but if you get it in a little Goya jar with the honeycomb, you get to play with the honeycomb, and watch the last bits of honey slide down the old jar as it drips the last bits of honey into the glass, which holds the new honey as it falls from the honeycomb. I take out the honeycomb because after a while, wax starts to float around and that doesn't taste so good in coffee. Doesn't it look like a glass ornament?

If I Had a Thousand Bucks (and change) to Spend...at Impulse

Impulse for me is the only boutique I've ever walked into and seriously thought to myself that I could wear every item on the the racks. Unfortunately for me, I am not in a financial position to buy every item off of those racks so instead, I have to fantasize about my favorite pieces and figure out how to scratch together the money to buy maybe one of two of those items.

Now if I could somehow scratch together $1250. I could hang these in my closet. I think it's time to Ebay some old clothes....or take in some borders.

Fascinated with StyleHive

I've taken the dive into StyleHive. Whee! Between StyleHive and StumbleUpon, why, I don't know when I'll ever work! But it's fun finding things and sharing them with the world. So I put together a little StyleHive slide show of some Camper shoes I like. I couldn't get them right from Camper b/c of how the Camper site is built, so I had to go to Zappos and Amazon.

And see how Camper is wearing the boots I liked before. With socks. Click on this link, but I don't know how long this runway walk will be on here:

Loeffler Randall for Target

Loeffler Randall Minnie Slouch

I wasn't a big fan of of the handbags that Devi Kroell designed for Target but I think that the husband and wife team behind Loeffler Randall has produced some good looking stuff. Is it too much to hope that they do these up in leather instead of PVC? It is? Well, how about them doing a low cost version of the Minnie Slouch? Source: ELLE

The Brown Dress Project

This woman wore the same brown dress every single day for a year as part of performance art project. My first thought looking at the photo was "damn, why that sack of a dress?" but really I admire the spirit of the piece. I know that I buy things on impulse that I really don't need. In spite of all the clothes I have in my closet and in boxes, I still end up wearing the same outfits pretty frequently. For me, it's either my completely unimaginative combination of skinny black pants, flats, and a light sweater with a scarf; a shift; or my trusty denim. Very boring but it works for me, especially with a toddler running around my knees.

Sheila's Heels

When my family and I lived in Luxembourg, we subscribed had a SKY satellite dish so we could watch British TV. The Sheila's Wheels auto insurance for women commercial was on constant rotation so I still have their catchy but incredibly annoying jingle on permanent rotation in my head.

Anyway, in response to a study which showed that up to 80% of women drive while wearing "inappropriate" footwear, Shiela's Wheels has developed convertible driving shoes so that women don't have to choose between style and safety.

Jacky Brown, spokesperson for Sheilas’ Wheels, said: “Our Sheila Driving Heel design could provide safety-conscious female motorists with the ultimate driving shoe - allowing women to wear a safe flat shoe whilst driving, and a fashionable heel once they are out of the car.”

Personally, I'd rather wear JP Tod's pebble-soled driving moccasin but then, I gave up being a high heel girl awhile ago. I think these shoes are a little less than cute but I do like the idea. If they could get a tube of lipstick to fit into that heel they might be onto something.

Rosa Cha - Spring 2008

I spied pics from this show on 55 Secret and NY Magazine. These are seriously sexy bathing suits, Cha does a great job of selecting some models with great not-too-skinny figures. I think I might have to tape a photo of this model on my fridge for inspiration. If my legs looked like that, I would throw away all of my pants.

Something Shifty

I would wear a shift dress everyday if I could get away with it. I think it's an elegant shape that flatters most every figure and it goes from day to evening with ease. Diane von Furstenberg has some particularly beautiful shifts out this fall but it's not too hard to find something worth taking home at most price levels.

Poll: Should I get black highlights?

I want "haute hair!". On the Paris trip, one goal is to get a dramatic hair color. Here's what I look like now - blond highlights on a brownish/reddish base that is my own:
black or blond highlights with layers
I was going for the Daphne Guinness look, but am not getting encouragement on it! Rick, my literal rock star hair stylist in Columbus advised me to go with Mocha #5 all over, and I'd like thick, like a 2" blond highlights. But the black could be cool and dramatic...

With black highlights, I would look like this (if I curled my hair)
